"Courage is not the absence of fear, but the strength to continue despite it."

PRAYER IS THE COURAGE TO HOPE

  • This is a meditation – a nod to a timeless, endless, and repetitive practice of returning and beginning again. It is about finding hope, and then hoping that that hope might find us peace. It is about weaving together our fractured histories and making us whole. Again.

It begins with a photograph of late autumn light’s reflections in our late autumn pond. I’ve printed, cut, folded and sewn hundreds of squares into three quilt-like panels that resemble weavings as the light filters through.

I chose three because in my Jewish tradition the number three symbolizes the harmony of opposites: Chesed (unconditional love), Gevurah (strength, discipline and restraint) and finally - Tiferet (beauty, harmony and balance). This interplay of opposites mirrors the beauty that arises when we find equilibrium between giving and receiving, action and reflection, mercy and justice.
