Wall Flowers

It was the first dance of that fist all-important high school year.

They - were so sophisticated. They - were so very cool. They - were the part of 'them' that we all wished could be 'we'.

With longing and envy - we three - watched as they worked the room..as they governed and ruled the floor. All eyes stared. All ears opened wide..hoping to be a part of the secrets they were whispering loudly. Quiet enough so that only they could hear...but loud enough to make sure that everyone else knew that they weren't included.

We wished only to know how they did what they did. So effortless. So easy. We wished only to be considered..when consideration was given as to who was 'in' and who was clearly 'not'.

So impossible - it appeared to me from my safe corner of just us three.

I watched and waited and wished to be anyone other than me.
